Berlin (AP) - The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was shrouded in darkness for a while on Saturday evening as a sign of climate protection.

At 8.30 p.m. the lights were switched off during the international Earth Hour.

This should set an example for environmental and climate protection.

According to the environmental organization WWF, images of destroyed ecosystems were previously shown on four large screens on Pariser Platz, which were replaced by images of intact seas and healthy forests in the dark.

The "Earth Hour" was proclaimed for the 15th time by the WWF.

The campaign aims to draw attention to the waste of resources.

Thousands of cities around the globe take part every year, in Germany there should be far more than 500 this year.

Because of the corona pandemic, the environmental organization has refrained from public events with a large audience for the second year in a row.

Instead, there was a call to turn off the light in your own apartment and to publish pictures of it in the social networks.
