Pictures in local media show derailed train carriages.
"The trains collided when they were traveling at a not so high speed, which led to the destruction of two carriages," an official source told the news agency Reuters.
About thirty ambulances have arrived at the accident site and for the injured to care.
Egypt has one of the region's oldest and largest railway networks and accidents are common.
