Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony's hospitals are again recording an increasing number of Covid patients.

Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) sounded the alarm on Friday.

"The situation is serious.

Our hospitals are again approaching their limits. "

The clinics approached the critical value again, at which the capacities were exhausted.

According to the ministry, there are currently 961 Covid patients in normal wards and 270 in intensive care units.

This corresponds to a utilization of 67 percent and 83 percent respectively.

According to forecasts by the Central Hospital Control Center Saxony at the University Clinic Dresden, the critical value of 1,300 corona patients could already be exceeded on April 2, according to a pessimistic assumption, it said.

Moderate modeling predicts this congestion for April 9th.

The Saxon Corona Protection Ordinance stipulates a return to lockdown in the event that more than 1,300 beds in normal wards are occupied by Covid patients.

"The stress on hospitals by Covid patients is an extremely important indicator of the extent of the pandemic," emphasized Köpping and called for caution beyond the Easter days.

It is about keeping contacts low and avoiding any risk of infection.

The hospitals could increase their capacities and also accept more than 1,300 patients.

But that again leads to an enormous overload of doctors and nurses.

In addition, the high number of Covid patients reduces the capacity for other, urgently needed medical treatments.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has set up three clusters to distribute Covid patients and set up control centers at the Chemnitz Clinic and the Leipzig and Dresden University Hospitals.

These monitor the capacities of the hospitals in their regions.

If there is a threat of overload, the hospital concerned first increases its places itself.

Then new patients are distributed to other hospitals by the control centers.
