Veteran American diplomat Henry Kissinger urged the United States to reach an understanding with China on a new world order to ensure stability, otherwise the world will face a dangerous period like the one that preceded the First World War.

Kissinger (97 years) had a great influence on the most important political events of the seventies of the last century during his work as Secretary of State under former Republican presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Kissinger said in a speech via the application of (Zoom) at an event held by the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, that the important matter is whether the United States and its Western allies can reach an understanding with China about a new world order.

"If we do not reach this point and if we do not reach an understanding with China in this regard, then we will be in the situation that preceded the First World War in Europe, where the continuous conflicts were resolved on an immediate basis, but one of them was out of control at some point," he added.

He added that the matter is more dangerous now than it was in the past, as the high-tech weapons that both sides possess could lead to a very dangerous conflict.

He said the United States would likely find it difficult to negotiate with an adversary like China who would soon outgrow and become more advanced in some areas.

Another issue, he said, is whether China will accept this new system, praising its skills in organizing itself to achieve technological progress under the control of the state.

But he said that the West should improve its performance, adding, "The West should believe in itself ... It is our internal problem, not a Chinese problem."
