Berlin (dpa / bb) - The citizens' initiative “Deutsche Wohnen & Co expropriate” has collected around 50,000 signatures for their concerns within a month.

She advocates "socializing" real estate companies with more than 3,000 apartments, ie expropriating them for billions in compensation.

The aim is to stop the rise in rents.

For their referendum, 48 172 signatures had been submitted by Thursday, as the state election control announced on Friday.

The Berlin district election offices have so far checked 10,653 signatures, of which 7817 are valid.

The alliance has until June 25th to collect signatures.

If seven percent of Berlin's eligible voters take part, around 175,000 people, a referendum follows, which runs like an election.

This would most likely take place in parallel with the House of Representatives election on September 26th.

The initiative presented its own, slightly different figures on Friday.

Then she collected 47,342 signatures and handed them over to the regional election committee.

In order to apply for the referendum, “Deutsche Wohnen & Co. expropriate” had already collected 77,000 signatures in 2019 - at least 20,000 were necessary in the first phase.

After more than a year of legal examination, the red-red-green Senate gave the green light.

According to the law, the initiative still had to wait and see whether the House of Representatives would take on its request, but it did not.

The second collection phase then began on February 26th.

"We are well positioned and are very optimistic for the coming weeks," said a spokeswoman for the initiative.

The referendum is not only viewed critically by the DAX-listed real estate company Deutsche Wohnen.

The opposition parties CDU, AfD and FDP in Berlin are also firmly against expropriations from housing companies, as is the SPD.

SPD top candidate Franziska Giffey thinks she is the wrong means.

CDU parliamentary group leader Burkard Dregger has already announced that he may take action before the state constitutional court.

Jusos and the Left in Berlin support the initiative.
