On Thursday, two trains collided in the Rawd al-Farag area between Imbaba and Ramses, west of Cairo, which led to injuries, while the Railways Authority announced the suspension of all flights due to the bad weather conditions.

The collision occurred between trains 991 and 989 coming from Upper Egypt towards Cairo, between Imbaba and Ramses stations, where the front of one of them collided with the last car of the second train, injuring 23 people, according to preliminary data issued by the Ministry of Health and Population.

Ministry spokesman Khaled Mujahid said that 17 ambulances moved towards the collision site of the two trains, stressing that there were no deaths so far.

Social media users shared photos and videos of two trains colliding, one of which was malfunctioning due to heavy rain and bad weather, and pictures show the presence of ambulances and police at the site of the accident.

Egypt has witnessed many bloody train accidents that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent decades.

According to observers, these accidents are mainly due to the wear and tear of the trains and the railway network and the negligence of the authorities to repair them.

In August 2017, 49 people were killed and more than a hundred injured in a collision of two passenger trains in the coastal Alexandria governorate (north).

The largest and worst trains disaster in Egypt occurred in February 2002, when a fire gutted several cars from a passenger train heading from Cairo to Aswan (south), killing more than 350 people at that time.
