Hanover (AP) - After the violent death of a 42-year-old on a country road near Hameln (Lower Saxony), the Hanover regional court sentenced her ex-partner to 14 years in prison for murder.

The defendant acted insidiously and for low motives, said presiding judge Stefan Joseph on Friday.

At the end of August 2020, the 60-year-old Pole braked the car of his former partner, who had fled to a women's shelter, and attacked her with a hammer and a knife.

The woman dialed 911.

Those involved in the process had listened to the almost ten-minute recording on an earlier day of the negotiation.

She tried to persuade the perpetrator and fled bleeding from the car.

"Like in a horror film" described this by a witness who happened to drive past towards the end of the attack.

Because the man had drank a lot of alcohol prior to the crime, the court found that he was less guilty, which saved him from life imprisonment.

The 60-year-old received the verdict, outwardly unimpressed.

He had denied threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend, even though there was a voice message about it.

The police arrested him asleep in his apartment in Bad Pyrmont shortly after the attack.

The court was convinced that the previously violent man, described as domineering, wanted to punish the 42-year-old for leaving him.

Both met in 2018 as Polish temporary workers in the meat industry.

Most recently they worked for the same food company.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.
