Dusseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Because of a gathering of people and missing masks, a light show in Dusseldorf for the anniversary of the Greek independence revolution has been canceled.

The city announced on Friday.

On Thursday, the Rhine Tower in the state capital was illuminated in the Greek national colors of blue and white.

It was a registered action by the Greek Consulate General.

"An additional event, meeting or celebration beyond the lighting of the Rhine Tower was not registered and, according to the organizer, was not planned," said a city spokesman.

Until 8 p.m., however, numerous people had gathered to celebrate the special occasion.

According to estimates by the people present, around 2000 people came together at one point, many without a mask.

The light show was therefore canceled at 8:30 p.m. and the gathering was broken up around 9:30 p.m.

"The termination was peaceful and cooperative," said the spokesman.

Thursday marked the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the revolution that finally led to Greece's independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830.
