Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The controversial tender for 1.25 million fabric masks for the North Rhine-Westphalian police occupied the state parliament on Friday (10 a.m.).

In a current hour at the request of the SPD and AfD, the MPs demand answers.

They want to know why the state government is sticking to the tender for the so-called everyday masks, although medical masks have to be worn in many places to reduce the risk of corona infection.

The responsible state office has even extended the offer period to the beginning of April.

In the updated tender it is stated, however, that the number of situations in which the community masks are to be worn by the police has meanwhile "decreased".

"The urgency of the procurement measure is no longer necessary."

As a result, 1.25 million masks would no longer have to be delivered in one fell swoop.

The delivery can also take place in stages.

It is now "scientifically undisputed" that everyday or community masks have a poorer protective effect than medical masks, according to the SPD's application.

Especially in view of the spread of the British virus variant, which is considered to be more dangerous, cloth masks are no longer suitable for adequately protecting police officers.

With its application, the AfD wants to put the state government's awarding practice in the procurement of masks to the test.

The government must explain why it "spends money on obsolete or inferior masks".
