Mühlhausen (dpa / th) - After the outbreak of avian influenza in Weimarer Land, poultry farmers from the Unstrut-Hainich district have now also been asked to report if they bought animals from the farm concerned.

Anyone who has fetched animals from the poultry farm in Niederreißen from March 1 should report to the district veterinary office, the district office announced on Friday.

In addition, poultry farmers should indicate when their animals are increasingly dying.

The poultry must be killed on holdings where the virus has been detected.

Avian influenza, also known colloquially as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease for poultry and other birds.

It can quickly reach epidemic proportions in poultry flocks.

It is considered harmless to humans.
