Vienna (dpa) - Top Austrian politicians assume that the German government will lift the entry restriction for Tyrol.

"I am pleased that the end of the controls is now official," wrote Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in a statement after the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) removed Tyrol from the list of virus variant areas on Friday.

Briefly interpreted this as a sign that the measures in Tyrol against the South African mutant had taken effect.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen contributed to the success, he emphasized.

With the help of the EU, additional vaccination doses were delivered to the Tyrolean district of Schwaz in order to push back the more contagious South African variant of the coronavirus with a mass vaccination.

The restriction of border traffic between Tyrol and Bavaria since mid-February was "an enormous burden and so unacceptable for us," said Tyrolean chief Günther Platter.

"After intensive discussions in the last few days, we were finally able to convince Germany to end the disproportionate border controls," he said.
