Birmingham (AP) - After several tornadoes in the southern US state of Alabama, at least five people died.
In the badly affected Calhoun district, several houses were also damaged and several people were injured, Sheriff Matthew Wade told CNN on Thursday evening (local time), without giving exact figures.
The National Weather Service warned that several southern states, including Alabama and Georgia, could experience more tornadoes on Friday night.
As US media reported, citing local authorities, three adult members of a family were killed when a tornado hit Ohatchee about 97 kilometers northeast of Birmingham.
A man and a woman died in caravans there and in Wellington.
The severe storms caused trees to topple over and damaged numerous buildings.
According to the website poweroutage.us, the electricity went out in thousands of households in Alabama and the state of Georgia to the east.
