Ludwigshafen / Mainz (dpa / lrs) - BASF wants to be climate-neutral by 2050 and is planning to invest billions for this.

Investments of up to one billion euros are planned by 2025 and a further two billion to three billion euros by 2030, the chemical company announced on Friday in Ludwigshafen.

"Climate change is the greatest challenge of the 21st century," said company boss Martin Brudermüller, according to the announcement.

BASF will increasingly rely on the use of renewable energies and accelerate the development and use of new CO2-free processes for the production of chemicals.

The focus of the transition to net zero CO2 emissions from 2050 is to be the use of new technologies in which fossil fuels such as natural gas are replaced by electricity from renewable sources.

Most of these technologies are being developed by BASF and with partners and are in the pilot stage.

“The prerequisite for the transformation of chemical production is the reliable availability of large quantities of renewable electricity at competitive prices.

Neither is the case in Germany today, ”said Brudermüller.

That is why BASF wants to invest in production facilities for renewable energies for its own use.

Since the replacement of existing production processes is capital-intensive, the group is trying to get funding within the framework of European and national programs.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister Anne Spiegel described the planned investments in future technologies as an important signal.

"I welcome the fact that, as in the past, BASF is setting itself clear climate protection targets as a pioneer in the chemical and energy-intensive industries," said the Green politician according to a statement.

It is important that it does not stick to the goals, but that renewable energies are expanded as best as possible in the country.
