Ludwigshafen (dpa / lrs) - Herbicides, gravel gardens, autonomous bicycle gearshift: the state winners of this year's “Jugend forscht” competition scored points in many interesting fields.
In Ludwigshafen, the winners in the fields of work, biology, chemistry, geo and spatial sciences, mathematics / computer science, physics and technology were chosen on Thursday.
An interdisciplinary prize was also awarded.
For example, Maria-Theresa Licka and Mario Schweikert from Leibniz-Gymnasium in Neustadt came out on top in the field of mathematics / computer science - they developed an app for sustainable viticulture.
Cell phone pictures are used to identify pests in diseased vine leaves at an early stage.
This is done using an app programmed for pest detection, which uses the coordinates of the recordings to create a map and shows winemakers the current regional extent of various vine diseases.
This could reduce the spread of pests, reduce the use of pesticides and protect the environment, it said.
A total of 862 participants applied for “Jugend forscht” and “Schüler experimentieren” in Rhineland-Palatinate, 41 young researchers took part in the state competition.
The motto of the 56th “Jugend forscht” competition was “Let the future exist”.
The winners will take part in the virtual federal final in Heilbronn from May 26th to 30th.
The presentation of the research projects took place digitally and was organized by the chemical company BASF in Ludwigshafen.

"Unfortunately, the competition could not take place last year," said BASF Board Member Michael Heinz.
"This year we definitely wanted to hold the state competition again, albeit virtually, because scientific and technical education and the promotion of young talent are particularly important to us."
