Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian state government informed the Düsseldorf state parliament today about its new key decision for coal mining in the Rhenish mining area.

State Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) presented the main features to the public this week.

Accordingly, the decision on the future of five villages on the edge of the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine will not be made until the end of 2026.

Until then, Keyenberg, Berverath, Kuckum as well as Ober- and Unterwestrich should not be used for coal mining.

The Hambach Forest at the Hambach opencast mine, the symbol of the protests, is to be preserved.

Environmental and climate initiatives have already announced further protests against lignite mining in the Rheinische Revier.

The Greens in the state parliament are also dissatisfied with the leading decision.

They doubt the need for open-cast mining for the energy industry and demand an end to lignite mining in the Rhenish Revier by 2030 at the latest. They also want the Hambach Forest to be put into public ownership immediately - for example by the NRW Foundation.

In addition, they propose to make the district a model region for an ecological traffic turnaround with the expansion of the rail network and public bus and rail transport.

In a current hour, at the request of the SPD opposition, the state parliament will then deal with the latest decision of the Higher Administrative Court (OVG) on corona restrictions in retail.

The OVG had overruled all customer limits for this area on Monday.

In the short term, there was then no longer any obligation to make appointments in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the opinion of the court, the regulations violated the constitutional principle of equal treatment.

However, the state government reacted to the decision within a few hours and tightened the corona requirements for stationery stores, bookstores and garden centers in order to ensure equal treatment.

Since then - as was the case before for fashion retailers or electronics stores - the obligation to make appointments and a person limit of one customer per 40 square meters of sales area has also applied to them.
