Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Association of Philologists is calling for four additional hours per week in all secondary schools over three years to deal with the corona-related learning gaps.

"The planned learning bridges during the holidays are not enough to compensate for the deficits," said Ralf Scholl, head of the Baden-Württemberg Association of High School Teachers, on Thursday of the dpa in Stuttgart.

For pupils in secondary schools that would mean an extra afternoon a week.

For the grammar schools, the “most elegant way” would be to switch from G8 back to G9 from the coming school year, said Scholl.

This is how you would win a “Corona catch-up year”.

"In the G8, additional hours to compensate for the learning deficits cannot be accommodated in terms of time."

He referred to an online petition from the “Bündnis G9 now”, which had supported over 12,500 people within two weeks.

According to Scholl's calculation, around 1,000 additional credits would be required for teachers for such a change.

The head of the association called on the Greens around Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann and the other parties to take this demand into account in the upcoming coalition negotiations.

“Politicians must finally take this legitimate wish of many students, parents and teachers at high school seriously and implement it.

Even before Corona, the weaknesses of the eight-year high school were obvious.

"The key words here are the enormous stress placed on many students and the sometimes inadequate university entrance qualifications for high school graduates."

The vast majority of the more than 370 grammar schools in the country take their students to the Abitur in eight years.

But there are 43 model schools in the country that also offer the G9.
