Frankfurt / Marburg (dpa / lhe) - The right-wing extremist NPD will continue to be represented in several Hessian municipal parliaments and district assemblies.

However, according to the preliminary results of the local elections on March 14, the party will have to surrender seats everywhere.

"The NPD has lost quite a lot of votes, even in its former strongholds," said Reiner Becker, head of the Hesse Democracy Center at the University of Marburg, the German Press Agency.

The NPD was "in spite of an enormous effort in terms of election campaigns for such a small party was anything but successful."

After the first trend results, the NPD had initially got a double-digit result in two places.

The proportion of votes then shrank in the course of the count.

According to the preliminary results of the local elections, the NPD in Altenstadt (Wetteraukreis) won 8.5 percent of the vote and three seats after 10.0 percent and four seats in the 2016 election. In Leun in the Lahn-Dill district, the party got 6, 2 percent (2016: 11.2 percent) and two seats (2016: 3), in Büdingen to 2.6 percent (10.2) and one seat (4) and in Wetzlar to 1.2 percent and one seat after 7th , 7 percent and 5 seats in 2016.

The NPD got one seat each in the district assemblies of Lahn-Dill and Wetterau.

At the state level, it came to 0.1 percent, according to the preliminary result.

The NPD regional association also explained the decline in votes with the fact that potential voters stayed at home during the polls.

In the election result, a connection is evident, said the expert Becker.

"Where the AfD started, the NPD lost votes."

In some cases, however, protagonists of the NPD - members of the party executive committee - could have achieved good results, for example in Altenstadt.

With the party “you always have to think about the protagonists.

That is always - in quotation marks - your "recipe for success" in Hessen, "explained Becker.
