Joint Chiefs of Staff said that North Korea launched two unknown projectiles this morning from around South Hamgyeong Province into the East Sea.

The ROK and US military authorities are conducting a detailed analysis on specifications such as range and altitude.

A military official said today that the projectile appears to be a ballistic missile, while the Joint Chiefs of Service only revealed that it was an unknown projectile and did not specify its type.

CNN broadcast cited a senior US official and said the projectile was a ballistic missile, but Japan's Prime Minister Suga said he had confirmed that the landing point was outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The Japanese government estimated that the North Korean projectile flew 420 to 430 km.

Unlike cruise missiles launched by North Korea four days ago, ballistic missiles are the subject of a UN Security Council resolution, regardless of range.

The last time North Korea launched a ballistic missile was on March 29 last year in Wonsan, Gangwon-do, when it fired a super-sized missile.

This is the first time since the launch of the Biden government in one year when the launch is confirmed.

From 9 am, the Blue House convened an emergency meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Security Council, presided over by Chief Security Officer Seo Hoon, to discuss countermeasures.
