Rostock / Papenburg (dpa) - At the Neptun shipyard in Rostock, the order book for new ships is empty after the delivery of two river cruise ships.

That is why the shipyard management, works council and IG Metall are negotiating a downsizing of the workforce.

This was announced by the company's mother, the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg on the Ems in Lower Saxony, on Thursday.

“We will therefore lack a lot of work in the coming years.

We must therefore adapt to the new situation and adjust the shipyard to it as soon as possible, ”said operations manager Lars-Gunar Klasen according to the announcement.

According to its own information, the Neptun shipyard employs 700 people.

The shipyard will continue to deliver engine room modules for new sea cruise ships, which will be built by Meyer in Papenburg and Meyer Turku in Finland, it said.

Because of the stagnation in tourism, new river cruise ships are currently not in demand.

Neptune continues to work on concepts for low-emission river ships.

"In this way, the shipyard can deliver a new ship as quickly as possible in the event of new orders," said Managing Director Thomas Weigend.

The two last river cruise ships for the time being were built on behalf of the Swiss shipping company Viking River Cruises from Basel.

It was the completion of a series of 65 sister ships since 2010.
