"Our presence in Tripoli testifies to the unity of purpose of the European countries most committed to the stabilization of Libya. Today we want to say that Europe will continue to stand by the Libyan people and support them on their path towards peace".

This was stated by the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, in Tripoli together with his German colleagues Heiko Maas and French Jean-Yves Le Drian.

"But we are also here to express our full support to the Libyan authorities and the process of transition and institutional reunification underway. We are ready to collaborate with the interim unified executive authority and to support it in the next stages of this process," he added.

Finally, Di Maio congratulated "his colleague and friend Jean-Yves and the Libyan authorities for the reopening, next Monday, of the French Embassy in Tripoli".

"Withdraw mercenaries and foreign forces"

"On the military side, we consider the complete implementation of the ceasefire agreement as a priority, starting with the reopening of the Sirte-Misurata coastal road, the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from the country and the 'launch of the Monitoring and Verification Mission of the ceasefire under the aegis of the UN, "said Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.

"Libya today has a unified government, legitimized by Parliament and in full swing. This is a result that, until a few months ago, seemed unattainable and which instead became a reality thanks to the will of the Libyans and the relentless efforts of the United Nations, which Italy and Europe have supported without hesitation, in the belief that there could be no military solution to the Libyan crisis. We hope that the government can now concentrate on some priority objectives, starting with the organization of elections on December 24th ", added the head of the Farnesina.

"We believe it essential that the Libyan people be able to express themselves in an electoral consultation within the times established by the Tunis Road Map. In this regard, it is essential that they find confirmation of a clear constitutional and legislative framework for parliamentary and presidential elections", concluded Di Maio.

"Libya guarantees respect for human rights"

"Our cooperation with Libya is also fundamental in the management of irregular migratory flows. We appreciate the commitment of the Libyan authorities in the fight against human traffickers and in the protection of maritime borders. At the same time, we expect the utmost effort to be made to ensure respect for fundamental human rights "concluded Di Maio.

"In this sense, I confirm Italy's commitment, also within the framework of a European action, to support Libya in managing flows and providing humanitarian assistance in favor of migrants and refugees".
