Munich (dpa) - After 35 goals this season by Robert Lewandowski, Uli Hoeneß believes more and more that the world footballer of FC Bayern Munich will surpass Gerd Müller's long-lasting Bundesliga record.

«I thought for a long time that Gerd's record could never fall.

But the way Robert plays this season and especially in the last few weeks, it could well be that Robert makes it, ”said Hoeneß of the German press agency.

In the 1971/72 season, Müller had scored 40 goals.

Hoeneß also had a share in the best performance, because he played at Bayern's side at the time and was involved in goals.

"I always thought that Gerd should be allowed to keep the record," said Hoeneß: "But if Robert makes it, then he deserves it and we have to congratulate him."

After his three-pack last matchday in Munich's 4-0 win against VfB Stuttgart, Lewandowski is only five goals short of at least equalizing Müller's best performance in the Bundesliga.

The 32-year-old Poland still has eight games of the season.

Hoeneß praises Lewandowski in advance: "As outstanding performances as he has brought nationally and internationally in recent years, he deserves to be the top scorer of all top scorer in the end."

The Munich honorary president also believes that a new record could last for a good 50 years.

"I can't imagine that it could be any shorter," said the 69-year-old Hoeneß.

Müller will definitely keep a record beyond this season.

The now 75-year-old Müller leads the all-time Bundesliga goalscorer list with 365 goals, still clearly 94 goals ahead of second placed Lewandowski (271).

His contract in Munich will (initially) run for another two years.
