Karlsruhe (dpa) - The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe will decide on Thursday (8.30 a.m.) whether companies may charge their customers an extra fee for online payments via PayPal or instant transfer.
The competition center wants the question to be clarified in principle and has sued the Munich long-distance bus company Flixbus.
The reason for the uncertainty is a new regulation with which the German legislator implemented an EU requirement at the beginning of 2018.
It prohibits fees for paying by bank transfer, direct debit or credit card.
Paypal and Sofortüberweisung are not mentioned.
Flixbus had each charged an extra fee, the amount was graded according to the ticket price.
At the moment, the company says it no longer charges any fees.
PayPal itself refers to its general terms and conditions, which were changed in January 2018.
Since then, retailers have been banned from charging their customers surcharges.
According to the competition headquarters, there are still violations.
