Berlin (dpa) - The planned general corona test obligation for entry by plane to Germany is to apply from this Sunday at midnight.

The reason is that travelers and airlines can adjust to it, it said on Thursday from the Federal Ministry of Health.

Subject to the approval of the cabinet, the new entry regulation should be published this Friday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the minister-presidents of the federal states had decided that in view of the global pandemic, the federal government should stipulate a general obligation to test before departure as an entry requirement for flights to Germany.

Even now, travelers who come from “high-incidence areas” with a particularly high number of infections and areas with new virus variants must present a negative test before departure.

The general new regulation should now come into force in the night from Saturday to Sunday.

All passengers who want to travel to Germany by plane after midnight must have a test before departure.

Crews are not affected, as the ministry said.

Air travelers should in principle bear the costs of the tests themselves.

Carriage by the airline is only permitted with a negative test certificate.

Otherwise, local regulations stipulate that you have to isolate yourself at your own risk.
