Hamburg (dpa) - Catholic Christians in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg should be able to take part in face-to-face services at Easter despite the corona pandemic.

“Last year, we were unable to hold church services in our churches at Easter.

We want to avoid that as far as possible », wrote Vicar General Ansgar Thim in a letter to the congregations that was published on Thursday.

For the faithful, going to church and celebrating the Easter days is an essential part of their own religious life and a great need especially at this time.

The acting head of the archdiocese emphasized: "We do not deal lightly or carelessly with the current situation."

The infection process on site will be kept in view.

The communities made sure that the tried and tested hygiene concepts were adhered to.

Congregational singing is dispensed with, and worship participants are strongly advised to take a rapid corona test before visiting.

The archbishopric had consulted with the three state governments and the northern church before the letter from Thim, said a spokesman.

The Protestant congregations of the Northern Church have to decide for themselves whether they should celebrate church services.

According to a spokeswoman for the Hamburg-West / Südholstein church district, the church leadership wants to issue new recommendations.

Accordingly, the congregations in areas with an incidence of over 100 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants should examine in seven days whether alternatives to the face-to-face service are possible.

From an incidence of 200, services with visitors should be canceled.

In many cases it is still unclear how the municipalities will decide.

On the website of the Hamburg Michel congregation it says on Easter Sunday: "A worship service with the congregation is still subject to change."
