March 24, 2021 New York sees the legalization of recreational marijuana close at hand.

An agreement was reached between the state legislators.

The green light should be included in the Budget Law which will be presented on April 1st.

The measure provides that New York State citizens can legally purchase marijuana and also grow the plants for their own use.

The state, according to rumors, will impose a 9% tax on retail sales, generating an estimated $ 300 million in tax revenue a year.

Cities, on the other hand, will be able to add a 4% tax.

The legalization also provides for the creation of a new regulatory agency, the Office of cannabis management, which will have to grant licenses.

Mexico: Chamber approves legalization of cannabis for recreational use

The Mexican Chamber also approved on the same road on 10 March last. the bill approving the legalization of recreational marijuana.

The text, which will now have to return to the Senate, aims to wrest the drug trade from the hands of drug trafficking and, if approved, would create the world's largest cannabis market.

The bill, according to 'El Universal', would establish a system of government licenses for each link in the chain of production, distribution, processing and sales.

Government authorization will also be required for self-cultivation, with a maximum limit of six plants per person.

It will be possible to hold a maximum quantity of 28 grams for personal use, beyond which an administrative penalty will be triggered.

On the other hand, anyone found in possession of quantities exceeding 5.6 kilos will risk imprisonment.

The Mexican Supreme Court in 2015 declared the ban on recreational use of marijuana unconstitutional and in 2019 ordered the government to issue a law regulating it by April 30, 2021.

Mexican President, Andreas Manuel Lopez Obrador, is in favor of legalization and his party, Morena, has a majority in Parliament.

If the law is also approved in the Senate, Mexico will become the third country in the world, after Uruguay and Canada, to legalize the recreational use of cannabis, which in the US is legal in some states, but not at the federal level, and in the Netherlands. it's just tolerated.
