Laage (dpa / mv) - Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) sees the start of the hydrogen age in the northeast in the commissioning of the hydrogen power plant of the company Apex in Rostock-Laage.

"We are focusing on clean industries that are powered by renewable energies and hydrogen technology," said the head of government on Wednesday during a visit to the plant south of Rostock.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is already generating so much green electricity that it can mathematically cover its electricity needs.

So far, however, there has been no way of storing electricity from wind and sun on a large scale.

"With the hydrogen power plant, we have come a step further," stated Schwesig.

In the previous week she announced the establishment of a "hydrogen research factory" in Rostock, in which scientists and entrepreneurs can bring techniques and methods to market maturity.

This facility should be financed with funds that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania received as part of the coal phase-out for the shutdown of the power plant in Rostock.

According to the information, the energy company Apex in Laage is planning the development and use of various hydrogen technologies, from electrolysis, i.e. the production of hydrogen as an energy source from water, to the production of fuel cells and tank and storage systems.

The aim is to create a climate-neutral business park, it said.

Politics and business have high hopes for hydrogen technologies.

They should make a significant contribution to reducing the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and thus counteracting climate change.
