Zecherin (dpa) - Visitors and residents of the Baltic Sea island of Usedom (Vorpommern-Greifswald) will have to be prepared for obstructions on the only access from the south - the Zecheriner Bridge - in 2021.

As the Neustrelitz Road Construction Office announced on Wednesday, some technical bridge components have to be renewed.

This includes, among other things, a lock and a buffer on the bridge hatch.

For the technical work, which should start in April, the federal highway 110 does not have to be closed, but for loading and unloading important components and tools.

This should be done by the hour and "half-way" and will be announced separately.

The construction costs were given as 340,000 euros.

Usedom is the second largest German Baltic Sea island and has only two roads to the mainland: the B111 in the north in Wolgast and the B110 in the south.

The Zecheriner bridge leads over the Peene river and is opened from time to time to allow ships to travel freely between the Stettiner Haff and the Baltic Sea.

The B110 over the Zecheriner Bridge was only renewed in autumn 2020, which has already resulted in weeks of closures.

Usedom is a popular holiday island and is primarily known as the «bathtub of Berliners».

Due to the Corona restrictions, day tourists and vacationers are currently not allowed to travel.

Exceptions apply to second home owners and long-term campers.
