Google announces the first agreements with Italian publishers for Google News Showcase, which take into consideration the rights provided by Article 15 of the European Copyright Directive.

Among the signatories of the agreement: Rcs Media Group, Il Sole 24Ore, Monrif Group, Caltagirone Editore, il Fatto Quotidiano, Libero, Il Foglio, Il Giornale, Il Tempo, Ciaopeople, Edinet, Corriere Group, Citynews and Varese web.

Google explains that the agreement will allow publishers access to Google News Showcase, a new product that will allow them to enhance their online content and strengthen the relationship with readers.

Google points out that these News Showcase agreements take into account the rights under Article 15 of the European Copyright Directive in relation to specific online uses of journalistic publications (these rights do not apply to hyperlinks and the use of very short extracts) .

Google News Showcase is a new licensing program announced by Google in 2020, which will offer readers access to more in-depth content for a fee for the publishers who sign the agreements.

News Showcase will allow publishers to strengthen their relationship with readers, develop new models for content monetization and benefit from increasing traffic to their site.

News Showcase will be available in Italy in the coming months.

News Showcase is part of a broader framework of initiatives that represent Google's long-term commitment to the world of journalism.

In addition to programs such as the Google News Initiative and advertising collaboration with publishers globally, Google sends 24 billion clicks to publishers' sites each month through its platforms, enabling publishers to increase revenue through ads and news. subscriptions on their sites and apps.

In Italy, since 2015 Google has invested 11 million euros in Italian journalism projects through the Innovation Fund of the Digital News Initiative, while in 2016 it signed a three-year agreement with Fieg that led the company to invest over 16 million of Euro on a number of strategic sectors for digital publishing.

The web giant recalls that in 2020, with the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, it offered economic support to over 300 Italian newsrooms through its Global Emergency Fund for local journalism.
