Kiel (dpa / lno) - The demand for child care sickness benefits has increased significantly in Schleswig-Holstein, according to the AOK Nordwest.

In the first two months of the year, more than 16,800 members applied for the benefit, 13 percent more than in the same period last year, the health insurance company announced on Wednesday.

More than 81,000 days of child care sickness benefit had been applied for.

That is more than twice as much as in January and February 2020.

According to the AOK, the background is the new regulation that the benefit can also be requested when schools and daycare centers are closed due to the corona pandemic.

Parents can apply for child care sickness benefit if a child has to stay at home and be cared for there because of an illness and one parent cannot go to work as a result.

Each parent is entitled to a maximum of 20 days per year, single parents a maximum of 40 days.

With two children it is a maximum of 80 and with more children a maximum of 90 days per year.
