American actor George Segal, nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1967 for his performance in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," died Tuesday in California at the age of 87, Hollywood magazine Deadline reported. .

George Segal died "of complications from heart bypass surgery," his wife Sonia said in a statement to the magazine.

Born on February 17, 1934 in a small town in the State of New York, he made his film debut in the early 1960s and appeared in particular for a small role in "The Longest Day", an epic 1962 fresco on the Normandy landing.

His main feats of arms will however come a few years later with, therefore, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", alongside film giants like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

He will also turn as a main role under the direction of legendary directors like Stanley Kramer in 1965 in "La nef des fous", or Sidney Lumet in 1968 in "Bye Bye Braverman".

With the poster of more than fifty films until 2010, it will receive - in addition to its nomination with the Oscars - the Golden Globe for the best actor in a comedy in 1974 for "A mistress in the arms, a woman on the back ".

George Segal was also known for his roles on television, mainly in sitcoms.

Since 2013, he played the role of "Pops Solomon" in the series "The Goldbergs".
