A huge container ship has run aground in the
Suez Canal
due to a gust of wind, the shipping company that operates it has announced, and maritime traffic has stopped on
one of the busiest trade routes in the world
.
A photo released Tuesday shows "MV Ever Given,"
a 400-meter-long, 59-meter wide Taiwanese vessel
, crossing the canal, blocking traffic.
"The container ship ran aground accidentally, probably after being hit by a gust of wind,"

The company is in contact "with interested parties, including the Authority that manages the canal, to
help the ship as soon as possible,
" he said.
According to the

, after the incident more than 100 ships are waiting to pass through the
Suez Canal
.
"There was a grounding incident," Alok Roy, director of BSM Hong Kong, which manages "Ever Given," told Bloomberg.

, an Instagram user, posted a photo of the giant container ship from the
"Maersk Denver"
, locked just behind the "Ever Given."
"A ship in front of us ran aground while crossing the channel and is now blocked across," he wrote.
"Looks like we're going to stay here for a while."
According to the maritime surveillance site

, the ship was bound for Rotterdam.

Egyptian authorities have not made any statements about the incident.
Through the
Suez Canal
, opened in 1869, passes 10% of international maritime trade.
Almost 19,000 ships used it last year, according to the
Suez Canal Authority
(SCA).
The canal is an essential source of income for Egypt, to which it contributed 5.61 billion dollars (4.7 billion euros) last year.
