Hanover (dpa / lni) - residents of the Leinetal near Hildesheim are campaigning for more nature conservation with a petition to the Lower Saxony state parliament.

They fear ongoing environmental damage on the site of the former Desdemona potash mine in Alfeld-Godenau, which was used as an underground ammunition factory during World War II.

According to the petition, almost 134,000 tons of contaminated material are to be covered with a layer of 786,000 tons of moderately contaminated material.

Subsequent rehabilitation by dredging is thus “de facto excluded”, criticize the applicants.

The citizens' initiative "No contaminated sites in the Leinetal" warns of a 400 by 100 meter and 11 meter high "poison mountain" that should only be sealed with a film or layer of clay.

In heavy rain or floods, toxins could get into the groundwater, it is said.

In addition, a high level of noise pollution is to be expected in the next few years, because 80 trucks per day would have to come for the embankment.

Overall, the planned embankment will take about five years.

The petition started at the end of November and found more than 5,600 signatories within 6 weeks.

On Wednesday (12 noon) the petitions committee of the state parliament will therefore deal with the application.

At least 5000 signatures were required within the six-week period.
