Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Damage to property and arson caused damage of several hundred thousand euros in a Frankfurt school.

The perpetrators smeared Nazi symbols such as swastikas and the number 88 on boards and doors, as the police announced on Tuesday.

The police also used toilet paper rolls to set fire to them before they fled.

According to a spokesman, the state security has started the investigation.

The police are looking for witnesses.

The fire brigade was able to intervene quickly on Tuesday morning, it said.

"Nonetheless, damage in the hundreds of thousands can be assumed."

The perpetrators broke into the school through a window between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.
