Hanover (dpa / lni) - The bishops of Lower Saxony have shown themselves to be irritated by the demand from the federal and state governments for a waiver of church services in the form of attendance at Easter.

"We are irritated to learn from the media that the churches are asked to hold exclusively digital services from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday," said the Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony and the Lower Saxony Catholic Office on Tuesday.

The federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday night to ask the religious communities not to attend church services at Easter.

«For weeks, our congregations have been preparing the services from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday and are considering different formats for conveying the message of the cross and resurrection: services in churches and in the open air, live stream services, door-to-door actions, devotions on trucks and at crossroads" it continues.

There are also detailed hygiene concepts that are strictly applied.

"In the sense of the churches' own responsibility, it is our goal to celebrate divine services both presently and digitally over Easter within the framework of the previous regulations of the Lower Saxony Corona Ordinance," the bishops continue to explain.

They also emphasized that they value the churches' own responsibility.

However, the local infection process is always taken into account when deciding on the form of the worship service.

Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) announced on Tuesday evening that he wanted to talk to the churches and religious communities about the services.
