Freiburg (dpa / lsw) - The Archbishop of Freiburg, Stephan Burger, has given leave of absence to a dean of the Catholic archdiocese on suspicion of embezzlement.

The archdiocese announced on Tuesday that the man had reported to Burger and stated that, as a senior pastor of a pastoral care unit, he had supported those in need with the church's money.

The priest did not enrich himself and also reported himself to the public prosecutor.

The audit office of the archdiocese is to determine the amount of damage.

The dean, who has been on leave since Thursday, promised to make up for the financial damage, it said.

His respective deputies take over his duties in the deanery and parish for the time being.
