Halberstadt (dpa / sa) - Cathedral and cathedral treasure in Halberstadt are preparing for the planned reopening this Saturday.

In the past few months, repairs and cleaning work have been carried out behind closed doors and the lighting control has been optimized, as Domschatz spokeswoman Claudia Wyludda announced.

Stone objects were cleaned, such as a figure from the 14th century with mediaeval paint deposits.

In addition, parts of the exhibition have been redesigned.

In the Gewändersaal, for example, a delicate Mary's cloak will be shown next to a statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century.

It is there next to a processional flag made of green silk, which comes from the 14th century.

It is adorned with one of the oldest Byzantine embroidery of the 12th century.

The Halberstädter Domschatz is one of the most extensive medieval church treasures in Europe.

It includes around 650 relics, carpets, robes, ivory carvings and goldsmithing work.

Unlike many other church treasures, it was preserved at its place of origin.

Anyone who wants to visit the cathedral treasury needs an appointment.

Tickets for the time slots in the mornings and afternoons from Wednesday to Sunday as well as for public holidays can be booked via the online ticket system of the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt.

The cathedral treasury spokeswoman said that up to 100 people could be in the cathedral treasury at the same time.

There is enough space in the exhibition rooms to keep your distance.

Masks would have to be worn all the time.

According to Wyludda, the cathedral treasure had around 14,000 visitors last year, compared with 25,000 in the previous year.

Together, the cathedral and cathedral treasure would have had around 50,000 visitors in 2020.
