2020 - The Olympic Games in Tokyo will be postponed to 2021 due to the corona pandemic.

2016 - Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is sentenced to 40 years in prison by the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

He is one of the main culprits in the Srebrenica massacre in 1995. Karadzic appeals.

The judgment will become final in March 2019.

2011 - The Bundestag passes the law for the new federal voluntary service.

It replaces the last six months of community service, which will cease to exist with the suspension of compulsory military service on July 1st.

2006 - The engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and the Technical University of Dresden establish a joint research center in the city on the Elbe.

In the Dresden University Technology Center (UTC), lightweight components and materials for engines are to be developed.

1976 - The Argentine President Isabel Peron is overthrown by military coups and placed under house arrest for five years.

1958 - The American rock singer Elvis Presley begins his military service in the US Army.

1948 - At the World Trade Conference in Havana, the so-called Charter of Havana is signed by more than 50 states.

It is intended to serve as the basis for international trade relations.

The charter never comes into force as it has not been ratified by most of the industrialized countries.

1756 - Frederick II decreed the cultivation of potatoes in Silesia in a circular.

In other Prussian provinces, too, there were such "potato orders" before and after.

However, it took a while before the tuber was cultivated.

1603 - The Scottish King James VI, son of Maria Stuart, who was executed in 1587, takes over the English crown as James I after the death of Queen Elizabeth I and henceforth rules England and Scotland in personal union.
