Hamburg (dpa / lno) - For the first time, the Brazilian variant of the corona virus has been detected in Hamburg.

There is also another case with suspected mutant B.1.1.28, the health authority announced on Tuesday in its weekly corona briefing.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the Brazilian variant could be more contagious.

It is also assumed that the antibodies of those who have recovered and who have been vaccinated against the mutant, also known as P.1, are less effective.

The health authorities also reported evidence of the South African variant B.1.351 and 16 other suspected cases.

However, the authority had already confirmed the occurrence of this mutant in the past, but later withdrew the information.

According to the authorities, the British variant B.1.1.7 has so far been confirmed in 337 cases in Hamburg.

That is 92 more cases than in the previous week.

This form of mutation is suspected in a further 2346 cases.

According to the RKI, the proportion of this variant is over 70 percent across Germany.

Despite the dominance of this mutant, which is considered to be more dangerous, the number of corona patients in Hamburg's hospitals fell compared to the previous week.

On Monday, 237 patients were treated as inpatients in 17 hospitals, 83 of them in intensive care units, the authority further announced.

Last Monday, 262 patients were in the hospital, 101 of them in intensive care units.

In the Hamburg care facilities, only 14 residents and 18 employees are currently infected.

In the first half of January, around 660 residents and more than 330 employees from 65 care facilities were affected,

The number of those who died from or with the virus is also falling.

While the RKI had reported 267 corona deaths for the entire month of February, there are only 85 in the current month. According to the authority, the deceased are mainly elderly and very old people.

The age segments of those infected under 60 were each well below one percent of deaths.
