Berlin (dpa) - Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil has defended the planned Easter shutdown in Germany as an important contribution in the fight against the third wave of corona.

It is about something different than the previous lockdowns, said the SPD politician on Tuesday evening in the program "ZDF Spezial".

The aim is not to reduce the number of new infections extremely, it could not be achieved in such a short time.

"What we want is to break the momentum of the infections currently."

The steep rise must be ended so that after Easter one can go into a new phase of fighting pandemic with the help of more tests.

"Then let's try to bring freedom and security together," said Weil.

On Tuesday night, the federal and state governments decided, among other things, to declare Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday to be «rest days» in order to shut down public, private and working life during Easter for five days as never before in the pandemic.

The federal states expect the Federal Ministry of the Interior to quickly provide a legal basis.

“We are assuming that working life will be on hold overall.

There will be exceptions to this, ”said Weil.

We are waiting for the corresponding proposals from the federal government.

"Because of course we want to do it the same everywhere in Germany."

It is still open whether services should only take place virtually.

One still wants to search for this with the churches and religious communities.

«We know that this is a special field.

That is why we want to speak first before we make a decision.
