The fire, which broke out on Monday, quickly spread through the overcrowded refugee camp and destroyed thousands of tents and shelters where the refugees had lived for several years.

According to police and aid organizations, at least 50,000 people have become homeless.

An investigation has been launched into what may have caused the fire.

It is the third fire that has flared up in the refugee camps in the Cox's Bazar district within a week.

Gas cylinders exploded

On Friday, it burned in two different places and many people's homes were destroyed.

The fire spread quickly to different parts of the camps and it went even faster when the fire reached gas cylinders for cooking, which exploded.

In Cox's Bazar, there are a total of 34 camp areas that together extend over an area of just over 3,200 hectares.

It is mainly Muslim Rohingya who live there, since they were forced to flee from neighboring Myanmar, where the military launched a brutal offensive against the ethnic group in 2017.
