Hermsdorf (dpa / bb) - In the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, two further cases of avian influenza in wild birds have been detected.

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut had detected the highly contagious virus of the subtype H5N8 in the mute swans found dead in a pond, the district announced on Monday.

Since February 2017, these were the first two confirmed cases in the district.

In addition to the two birds found in Hermsdorf, four other dead animals were discovered and sent to the state laboratory.

The results are currently pending.

Avian influenza, also known colloquially as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease for poultry and other birds.

It can quickly reach epidemic proportions in poultry flocks.

The bird flu virus H5N8 is considered to be harmless to humans.
