The ex-spouse of a woman, who died Sunday morning, after being seriously burned in the fire of her apartment in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), was arrested and placed in police custody, AFP learned on Monday to the prosecution.

This 54-year-old man, known to the police, in particular for acts of domestic violence, was arrested by the municipal police, near the burnt apartment.

Suspected of having left the scene in a hurry

The neighborhood investigation suspects him of having left the scene in a hurry after the start of the incident.

In this case, the Perpignan prosecutor's office opened an investigation for murder of a spouse and arson and seized the judicial police.

The victim, a 55-year-old woman, was badly burned and poisoned in the fire in her home on the night of Saturday to Sunday around midnight.

Evacuated by the emergency services, she died in hospital.
