Hanover (dpa / lni) - Have athletes in their clubs ever experienced sexualized border violations, harassment and violence?

On Monday, the largest German popular sport study to date, entitled “SafeSport”, began in Lower Saxony on Monday.

Two universities in Wuppertal and Ulm have developed an extensive questionnaire for this purpose, which the State Sports Association and the Lower Saxony Sports Youth are now submitting to the more than 9,300 sports clubs in Lower Saxony.

Anyone who is or was an active member of an association and is older than 16 years can fill in the form.

"The focus is not only on today, but also on possible experiences that were made decades ago," said LSB CEO Reinhard Rawe on Monday at a digital press conference.

Because the total of ten state sports federations in Germany involved in the study all have the same problem: In 2016 there was already a study on sexual violence in competitive sports that revealed the “frightening number” (Rawe), “a good third of those surveyed Cadre athletes had already experienced border violations ».

However, comparable data are not yet available for popular sport.

The study therefore has two main goals: It aims to provide “comprehensive data on the frequency and types of sexualized border violations, harassment and violence in organized sport”.

And “it is an important component in the further development of our nationwide advisory and support system,” said Reiner Sonntag, the chairman of the Lower Saxony Sports Youth.

«Where do we have to be even more sensitive in the deliberations of association boards?

How can we encourage those affected to seek help even better?

And how can we improve the necessary aid structures? "

The questionnaire can also be accessed on the LSB and Sportjugend websites until the end of August.

The first results of this study are to be published at the end of the year.
