Mönchengladbach (dpa) - Former world and European champion Xabi Alonso (39) is said to be the new coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach according to a report by “Bild” and “Sport Bild”.

The Spaniard, who had played for record champions Bayern Munich for three years in the Bundesliga, will inherit Marco Rose, who will move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

"We do not comment on this story and will contact you if there is anything to report," said club spokesman Markus Aretz on Monday of the German press agency.

Borussia had ended their negative run in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening since the announcement of the farewell to Rose with a 3-0 win at FC Schalke 04.

Xabi Alonso has been coaching Real Sociedad San Sebastian's second team in his home country since 2019 and is the leader of the table in the third Spanish division with them.

As a professional, the 39-year-old also played for Liverpool and Real Madrid and was considered one of the world's best midfield strategists.

He celebrated the 2010 World Cup with Spain and was European Champion in 2008 and 2012.

In 2017, Alonso ended his professional career and immediately took over as coach of a youth team from Real.
