Saturday afternoon, a trainer in Pairi Daiza, Belgium, was seriously injured by a giant panda, we learned from the park.

An investigation has been opened to understand the circumstances of this unprecedented accident.

The facts took place inside the building which is reserved for Tian Bao, one of the park's giant pandas.

The 4-year-old Ursid came face to face with one of his caretakers "in the corridor reserved for access" to the staff who usually take care of the animals.

The park specifies that it was then that the panda "seriously injured its caretaker", an employee "present for many years at Pairi Daiza".

The man was seriously injured in the leg and arm.

"Solitary animals that do not tolerate intrusion into their territory"

It is a rapid intervention of the staff of the park, but also of visitors present near the garden of the pandas, which made it possible to save the healer.

The animal was removed, and the victim could be evacuated to a hospital.

According to the management of the park, its vital prognosis is not engaged.

An investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the accident.

It is normally impossible for a healer to be in direct contact with giant pandas "once they reach the age of two or [the weight of] 70 kg", affirms Pairi Daiza.

The park specifies that these ursids are “solitary animals that do not tolerate intrusion into their territory”.
