An investigation into Prime Minister Sturgeon's handling of the situation, carried out by independent lawyer James Hamilton, concluded that Sturgeon had not broken any rules.

If the investigation had shown the opposite result, Nicola Sturgeon would have been expected to resign, something that the opposition has always demanded.

Sturgeon has received harsh criticism for what she did - and failed to do - when she learned of accusations from several women against former leader Alex Salmond.

She was accused of trying to influence the investigation to the detriment of her representative.

Elections in May

The result could have a major impact on the Scottish Parliamentary elections, which take place in May.

Sturgeon and the SNP have promised to hold a referendum on leaving Britain if they win a majority.

Alex Salmond was acquitted last year by a court completely of the charges of sexual offenses.
