Syke (dpa / lni) - A fire broke out on Monday on the site of a metal works in Syke in the Diepholz district.

According to the initial findings of the police, a car burned first, then the flames spread to a large hall and two adjoining smaller halls.

Several fire brigades were on site with numerous emergency services, as police spokesman Thomas Gissing said.

"The column of smoke can be seen for miles."

He expected that the fire brigade will be busy with extinguishing work until the evening hours.

Nobody got hurt.

The «Kreiszeitung» had initially reported on the fire.

The exact cause of the fire was initially unclear.

Investigators assume that the flames were accidentally set off while working.

The buildings of adjacent companies and a workshop for disabled people were evacuated.

Residents should keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke.

The police spokesman was unable to provide any information about the damage, as it was initially unclear what was being stored in the halls.
