In protest against the privatization of water, climate activists from Extinction Rebellion occupied the entrances to the Coca-Cola company in Lüneburg on Monday.

About 80 participants protested against the planned third well in the region on International Water Day, according to the police.

"We'll stay here until our call to end the plans is met," said Jukka Kilgus of Extinction Rebellion.

The pumping of groundwater and the bottling of the beverage company is not compatible with the climate crisis.

The activists sat in front of two entrances and also blocked the deliveries.

With its subsidiary Apollinaris, Coca-Cola already operates two wells in the Hanseatic city and sells the extracted water under the name “Vio”.

The company is currently testing a third well with a pumping test, but this would first have to be approved.

The company reacts with incomprehension

“Just like the responsible authorities, we provided transparent information about the Vio well project and the underlying laws as well as official requirements for the management of water.

Our lack of understanding grows about the fact that only Coca-Cola is the target of allegations and also such protests and attacks, "it said in a statement on Monday.

“Especially against the background that the water extraction for the production of drinks only accounts for 1.7 percent of the total authorized extraction in the relevant groundwater body.” The impression arises that the brand awareness should attract attention regardless of the facts.

Opponents argue that the past three summers have been very dry and that there have already been problems with the groundwater supply in many areas.

"Every little bit of extraction damages our water supplies," stated Kilgus.
