China News Service, Nanning, March 22 (Reporter Huang Yanmei) The Health Commission of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Hong Kong Sharing Foundation signed a memorandum of cooperation on a cataract blindness elimination project in Nanning on the 22nd to jointly carry out a foreign aid project to eliminate cataract blindness.
According to the aforementioned project cooperation memorandum, Guangxi will send ophthalmologists to form a medical team to Cambodia and Laos to provide free vision restoration operations for local cataract blind patients.
The Sharing Foundation was established in Hong Kong in April 2018. It is China’s first international medical and health humanitarian assistance organization registered in Hong Kong. Its purpose is to implement humanitarian medical assistance under the “Belt and Road” initiative, focusing on medical care in East Africa and Southeast Asia. Countries with a weak health service base.
The foundation is chaired by Liang Zhenying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Liang Zhenying delivered a speech at the signing ceremony that day, saying that the friendship between the nations lies in the closeness of the people, and the closeness of the people lies in the communication of hearts. The initial goal of the Sharing Foundation is to develop into an international non-governmental organization featuring cataract surgery.
He also said that Guangxi has a unique location advantage and is an important frontier for multi-field and multi-level cooperation with Southeast Asian countries. He expressed his gratitude to Guangxi's medical staff for their hard work.
Prior to this, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Health Committee, the Hong Kong Center for International Cooperation of the “One Belt One Road”, the Asian Foundation for Blindness Prevention, and the Ministry of Health of Cambodia jointly implemented the “One Belt One Road” initiative to eliminate cataracts in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia.
The project was officially launched in May 2018 and ended at the end of 2019. After 19 months, Guangxi sent 12 batches of 74 ophthalmologist medical teams to Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia to perform 6208 cases of cataract surgery.
The project achieved good results and won praises from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
