An El Salvador surfer who was training for the Tokyo Olympics was hit by a lightning bolt during training.



According to the AP and AFP news agency on the 21st (local time), Catherine Dias Hernandez, 22, the national surfing team of El Salvador, was suddenly hit by lightning on the 19th while surfing on the Pacific beach of El Tungco near his home.



Emergency rescue teams were dispatched, but Dias died at the scene, and a funeral was held on the 21st in the tears of family and friends.



Dias was preparing for an international competition with Olympic qualifications ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, when surfing was first adopted as an official sport.



The El Salvador Surfing Federation called Dias a "great warrior", saying, "A great player representing El Salvador has left us."



Fellow surfers from around the world also celebrated Dias online.
